Autobiographical Narrative
As a classroom teacher for many years, and having been away from the classroom for some time, the pursuit of a Master of Science in Learning Design and Technology degree here at USF has been a transformative experience for me. This program has reignited and reenergized my knowledge and skills as an educator.
The menu at the top of this page shows the different components of this portfolio website. Please see the Video Tour for a short presentation of this website, its artifacts, and how each reflects the AECT Standards for Instructional Design and demonstrates my emerging Competencies and Skills for Instructional Designers.
As a USF alumnus (B.A. '88 in Psychology and B.A. '89 in Women’s Studies), I also hold a Master's in English ('96) and a graduate certificate in teaching English to second language learners (’96) from George Mason University. I was an English and Creative Writing teacher (grades 8-12) for almost fifteen years, as well as an adjunct community college literature and composition instructor for three years (English 101 and 102) at Northern Virginia Community College.

While I enjoy teaching with technology, I expect that I will always desire the human interaction of a real-life classroom. My first teaching position was here in Tampa in 8th grade English. After three years, I moved to Northern Virginia and taught honors and regular levels of English I, II, III and Creative Writing in Fairfax County at both Woodson and Fairfax High Schools, and I contributed to the curriculum for their first online English IV program. I enjoyed serving as faculty sponsor of both schools’ award-winning literary magazines. After seven years in Fairfax County, I returned to Tampa to teach honors and regular level English I and II at Freedom High. In both states, I worked with second language learners, hearing-disabled students, honors, gifted, special needs, and emotionally challenged students in the general education classroom. I team-taught with two different special education teachers in fully inclusive classrooms, and I served as an assistant department chair. During my time in the classroom, I created a hybrid, parallel online learning environment for my students. I always attempted to incorporate technology with the resources that were available at the time.
Plans for the Future
The Master of Science in Learning Design and Technology has provided the opportunity for me to explore the field of instructional design and educational technologies, and it has expanded my knowledge of pedological theories and strategies. During this program, I have concurrently completed a Graduate Certificate in Instructional Technology: Florida Digital/Virtual Educator to better prepare myself to teach in virtual settings like the Florida Virtual School.
This MS degree has been part of the natural evolution of my instructional career. I know I still have much to learn, but I look forward with enthusiasm and excitement to new possibilities as a digital/virtual educator and instructional designer. In the future, I hope to become a digital/virtual English teacher, either fully online or in a hybrid setting, but I am also very interested in working here at USF to assist professors and instructors with creating or adapting their instructional content for an online environment for virtual or hybrid courses. Ultimately, I also look forward to further experience in the instructional design field, and I am considering pursuit of a Ph.D.
