A Mini-Module on Metaverse and Augmented Reality in the Canvas LMS
In the spring of 2020, I experienced my first Maymester class in EME 6053: Internet in Education. This three-week semester condensed the course into an intense seminar examining the affordances of the internet and educational technology for education. Dr. Nathan Fisk asked his students to collaborate on a resource unit for educators using the Canvas LMS. This was the first opportunity for most of us to explore the instructor side of Canvas and to learn how courses are developed and organized by instructional designers in this platform.

The project asked each of us to individually research a new educational technology and design a "mini-module" around it aimed at teachers who are learning how to use technology in their classroom. We were to introduce this technology to an audience who had no previous knowledge or experience with it. For my part, I chose Augmented Reality through the program Metaverse. Our different mini-modules were compiled in a Canvas shell under the same front page pictured here. Given that this project was completed in a Maymester term, I would revisit this with videos of myself installing the app on my phone and setting up a new account. I would also demonstrate how to create a Metaverse experience in a step-by-step sequence. There would be interactive tasks and some formative assessments. I would also have users share and test Metaverse experiences they had created for their own classrooms.
My contribution to our page is Augmented Reality in Your Classroom Using Metaverse. My portion of the EME 6053 Collaborative Course mini-module is now on a free Canvas site which you may access by clicking the button below. (The site may require that you establish a free Canvas account at the login page to access this course on Canvas.) I hope you enjoy learning about the exciting possibilities of Augmented Reality with educational technologies like Metaverse.
